Hundreds gather in Fort Erie for Church on the Beach.

Church on the Beach is not Sunday morning church the way mom and dad used to do it.

It is as the name implies: it's a church service on a beach. In a very tangible sense, it's a church service that literally does away with walls that can hinder.

Now in its fifth year, the non-denominational service features music and speaking from various people each week throughout the summer. It has been drawing believers and non-believers alike for a Sunday service where the dress code is definitely casual.

Each service starts at 9 am, and generally runs for an hour. Typically, the morning will begin with a set of worship music that runs for approximately 20-30 minutes. Depending on the speaker, the time of sharing will also vary, but the message on average can be anywhere from 20-35 minutes long.

In the past few years, according to their website, the gathering has been growing in numbers. A total of 513 people attended in 2011, the first year the series was held. In 2014, that number swelled to over 6 000.

Some of the guests that have spoken in the past include motivational speaker and evangelist Nick Vujicic, and Christian psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman. Former Buffalo Bills football great Mark Kelso is scheduled to speak on August 16. But the focus of the event is not to grab the big name, but to exalt the name above all names, Jesus.

No offering is taken at the service. Everyone is welcome, regardless of religious background. And because of its location, visitors come from both sides of the border with lawn chairs, beach blankets, and toys for any children in tow. The vibe at the meeting is very informal, which makes it a great place to bring non-Christians who may be wanting to know more about Jesus.

Depending on the severity of inclement weather, umbrellas are made available. Thus far, Church on the Beach has suffered from only one cancelation due to weather.

Sponsored by Kingdom Bound Ministries, and in partnership with WDCX radio, Church on the Beach also has South Niagara Life Centre Ministries as a resource partner.

Church on the Beach is located on Crystal / Bay Beach on Lake Erie, less than 10 miles from the U.S. the border. Click here to get directions. Paid parking is nearby.
